Mrs. King has previously taught in a preschool setting and eventually managed preschools in the Duval and Clay County area. She taught 3rd grade at Belmont for 4years.


Personal/Profile:

Mrs. King loves kids of all ages, encouraging children to reach their goals is her passion. After years of living in the Clay County area, Mrs. King relocated back to Columbia County to be near her family. She enjoys the beach, watching sports (Go Gators), and spending time with her family that includes her husband and 2 amazing little boys.

     Food Drive: We talked about how many people they could feed with all the food that was donated, how giving to help others is a grand reward in itself, and being thankful that we were all able to help.  Thank you for all your donations!

Learn something new everyday...I found out this week ,told to me by a student, that cockroaches can live headless for up to 24 hours!  Now that may seem weird but... we celebrate finding out "stuff" that no one knew before!  Keep learning, asking questions, and finding out how and why :))))))

Week of Nov 2

   A huge and heartfelt thank you to all of you for donating items for the school food drive. The look of joy on their faces when they donate is wonderful ...helping others is a heart changing experience. 
 
     FOCUS SKILLS:
Reading: visualization as a reading strategy, statement and question sentences, synonyms, problem and solution
Math: division strategies, continuing to practice multiplication fluency
(knowing the facts by memory)
Social Studies: bartering, currency, goods and services, needs and wants-all of those in regard to economy
Science:  animal research project- we will be completing the project in class
 
     Homework:
     *spelling, vocabulary, practice cold read (due Friday), 1 math page every night and AR daily (6 points total by Friday, Nov, 6th)
     *Study Island - Possessives, Properties of Multiplication and Division, Characteristics of Money and Bartering 
     *Math- 1 page daily - your child will bring this home in their binder-it is due the next day.
 
     SPIRIT WEEK is coming up Nov. 16-20 ...this is a fun time to encourage school spirit and earn points for houses!  Please see the daily list for dress  on the weekly Belmont email to parents/families.

Heading into the 2nd nine weeks, homework will look a bit differently.  As normal, Math homework will be sent home daily and due the next day. The spelling and vocabulary lists and a practice cold read will be sent home on Monday; due on Friday.
 
It is absolutely necessary that your child is:
*Reading EVERY day at home; testing the next day at school- 3 points weekly WITH a test average of 85% or higher 
*Practicing spelling and vocabulary EVERY day at home
*Achieving the 3 assigned Study Island topics every week-70% or higher

We are down to the last 4 days of the 9th week...that is unbelievable! Everyone has 4 days to finish AR and conquer Study Island blue ribbons.  I am so very proud of my students, their hard work, tackling new skills, stretching to be the best 3rd graders everrrrrrrr!

     Week 8 of the 1st nine weeks...that is hard to believe!  The days have flown by:)
 
     SHOUT OUT to those who are leading in Study Island, with 20 or more blue ribbons in 3rd grade Skills:Chloe, Shelby, Lily, Kate, McKenzie, Logan.
Keep up the great work.  Please check with your child and make sure they have at least 19 blue ribbons completed by this Friday, the 9th.  Study Island practice and success in 3rd grade are directly linked.  Students who independently conquer the topics are the ones who learn to persevere and master the FSA.

Please remember AR achievement is a combination of points and an 85% or higher test average.  We are still reading and testing daily so that everyone can reach their goal.  It is absolutely vital that your child is reading at home every day as well!

Reading:  author's point of view (their opinion), irregular plural and collective nouns, comprehension strategies
Math: Chapter 3 review and test, begin Chapter 4 with multiplication as repeated addition and arrays
Science:  animal classification ( vertebrate, invertebrate, bird, insects, mammals, reptiles, etc.)
Social Studies: understanding the election and voting process as a part of government;  holding a mock election - we have candy as candidates!
 
We are nearing the end of the nine weeks...October 15th.  AR goals must be met by the end of the day on the 15th so that your child may know the success of reaching their goal and participating in our 3rd grade AR party.  
Also, each student always has the opportunity to raise their Study Island grades by re-working the assigned topic.  
 
Parents and Families- thank you! Your example of integrity and honesty in having your child complete their work independently and pushing through to accomplish their goals will teach them vital life skills.  Your help is greatly appreciated !

The students can work on previous assignments to raise their scores.  The goal is to have them work independently and strive for making the scores  positive, healthy  ones!

Homework:)  Please review the homework assignment with your child.  Homework counts toward a work habit grade and more importantly reinforces skills taught in class.   Great practice=solid skills.

     1/2 way through the first nine weeks!  Progress reports will be sent out soon...the expectation is that the report will be sent via email.  I will notify you the day the report is sent and would like for you to respond to the notification so that I know you have viewed the report.
 
     AR- by the 18th your child should have a minimum of 15 points and a test average of at least 85%.  Please have your child read DAILY at home so that they will come prepared to test at school.  AR is a vital part of building reading skills and prepping for the FSA.  
     Study Island- assignments for the week are :Spelling, Ask and Answer Questions, and North American Landmarks.  The assignments are to  be completed by Friday, the 18th.  
 
AR and Study Island work is included in your child's grades.  Not completing the work will result in a 0 in the grade book. 
 
Conferences:  Thank you to all of you that have responded and scheduled a conference.  If you have not set a date and time with me please, do so, as soon as possible!  Due to how school ended and the amount of time that the students were away, we are facing gaps that will have to be bridged and conquered!  It will take all of us -student, myself, and you , working together to insure 3rd grade success,

     This class is amazing!  3rd grade is an academic leap and learning curve.  This group has jumped in and are on the way to becoming successful 3rd grade students.
 
     Reminders:
1.)  AR...AR...AR...AR...oh and...AR!  Please read every night so that your child is able to test and reach their goal of 3 points per week!  By Friday, Sept. 4th , they will need at least 9 points.  
 
2.) Study Island will be completed at school.  In the 3rd grade, SI is used as part of the subject grade and fidelity is important.  Most students who complete all the SI ribbons before the FSA will score a level 3 or higher.
 
3.) ALEKS - can be worked on during school or at home.
 
     Focus:
Reading:  Sequencing, Predicate, Subject, Genre-Autobiography
 
Math: 3 and 4 digit addition , compatible numbers for addition

Week of August 24th

Week of August 24th!

     Our 1st week of 3rd grade has been conquered!  The students were amazing as we worked through new procedures, safety measures, and beginning 3rd grade skills.  I am very proud of all of them!
     
     Focus for this week will include:
ELA/Reading:  sequence, visualizing as we read, realistic fiction, commands and exclamations in sentence writing ( Vocabulary and Comprehension test on Thursday; Spelling test and Cold Read on Friday)
 
Math: rounding to the nearest ten and hundred (chapter test on Friday)
 
Science:  structure and function of plants
 
Social Studies:  cardinal directions , creating a map
 
Reminders:
AR point and averages are entered in as a grade weekly.  Each student should earn at least 3  points a week and keep their test average at 85% or higher.
 
Homework is Spelling and Vocabulary practice, math page nightly, math review (will be sent home on Thursday) , and daily reading for AR.
