Welcome to English Language Arts with Mrs. Adams! Together we will explore the Florida B.E.S.T Standards for 6th grade English Language Arts, Writing, and Literature. This year we will read literature novels, short stories, poetry and informational selections. We will cover personal narrative, poetry, expository essays, argumentative essays, and research. In class we will have time for reading, writing, grammar, and project work, but outside of class there will be independent reading, studying, completing assignments not already finished in class, and any writing projects as assigned. My goals for you as my student is to develop a love of learning and to become an independent thinker. I want you to be successful in my class, so I will be offering office hours for advice & assistance.

Course Requirements:

Please see supply list

Absences: Attendance will be taken at 7:45 AM sharp

You must fill out an excuse form from the front desk prior to or soon after your child has missed a day of school or tardy for any reason. If your child is sick, PLEASE make sure that they are fever free—without medication-- for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Only absences due to illness or doctor's appointments are excused.

Make-up Work:

Student’s have 2 days post absences to make up for all missed work. Work made up from an unexcused absence will result in a maximum grade of 59%. The gradebook in FOCUS will reflect a zero until work is made up. Unexcused dismissals follow these guidelines as well.

Assignments:

It is the responsibility of the student to turn in assignments on or before the due date. Please type all assignments as double- spaced, single-sided, with a 12 font size, 1” margins, and a proper paper heading and title unless otherwise instructed. Please let me know if an assignment is unable to be completed on the computer prior to the due date.

Homework:

Homework is not to exceed 20 minutes nightly and will consist of reading, completing any unfinished classroom assignments and studying for tests.

Late Work:

All late work will be subject to a deduction of at least 10% for each day the assignment is late. Late projects are deducted 20% for each late day. Missed tests will need to be completed within one week of the original test date.

Grading Policy:

Your child will be graded on a number of assignments throughout the week. Their grades will be weighted as follows:

Assessments 50%

Fundamentals 20%

Writing & Grammar 20%

Speaking & Listening 10%

Schedule:

Behavior Plan:

All students are expected to follow school rules and procedures as stated in the Belmont Academy Student Code of Conduct. Students must be productive members of the classroom by following Belmont Behaviors.

As a team, your child's teachers will maintain a record of student behaviors as related to classroom disruptions and insubordinate behaviors. Minor behaviors that interfere with the school day will be documented as a "strike." Major offenses will result in an automatic referral to the Elementary Assistant Principal. Students who receive three or more strikes from his/her classroom teachers in the course of nine weeks will be assigned lunch detention and parents will be contacted via email.

Upon three visits to lunch detention, the student will then be given a referral by the Elementary Assistant Principal through FOCUS for further disciplinary action.

It is our goal to promote lifelong learners who recognize the positive impact one can make by practicing self-control and becoming aware of one’s actions in a group environment therefore we have implemented the use of the Knights 55.
