Happy 3 Day Weekend!

Don't forget that there is no school on Monday!!!
Just a reminder, my 2 year old has to have surgery and be admitted to the hospital at the end of this week, so I will be out for Thursday/Friday of this coming week and a few days at the beginning of Literacy Week. Due to that, I will be sharing information for the next two weeks here! Mrs. Manske will be continuing to teach the major content, so the class will be left very little in the lone hands of a substitute.

In Language Arts, we will work through Unit 4 week 4 and Unit 4 Week 5.
This will cover expository text and poetry!
We will be working on Cause and Effect relationships and then figurative language.

In math, we will be working on properties of multiplication and division. We will test on Friday, February 1st for Chapter 9. The test review will come home on Thursday.

Literacy Week is the week of January 28th.

2nd Week of January

What an awesome week we have had! We celebrated AR accomplishments with our Breakfast with the Principal on Tuesday. We welcomed Mrs. Manske, our student teacher, full time to Belmont this week! She is splitting her time between our classroom and Mrs. Infantino's 4th grade classroom.

Report cards will come home on Monday. Please check the work packs that come home on Fridays to monitor weekly grades. FOCUS is updated at least every 2 weeks so that you can see how their overall grade is balancing out in each area. A STAR report was included on the front of their work pack today. Please look it over, sign it, and return. This test was completed the day they returned from break, so may reflect some irregular growth. If you would like a conference to discuss progress, please let me know!

We will be working on Unit 4 Week 3 in Language Arts. We are covering expository text using the reread strategy and compare and contrast. We are also working on using sentence clues to define words and working with helping verbs in grammar.

We will be reviewing for our math test on Monday and testing on Tuesday. Please click the provided links for practice videos and materials on Multiplication and Division through 12.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to all!
Remember that we are in the final countdown to state testing. As we work through these next few months, it is vital that students continue working independently on developing their reading ability. Please encourage them to read and AR test on chapter books. They should also continue working on their math skills on ALEKS and continue weekly homework on Study Island.
These online components help so much!

Students will STAR test to measure growth in the next few weeks. It is not uncommon that some students lose some progress at this time of year. If that is the case for your child, it is especially important that they get right back to work. Keep in mind that the 2 week break often affects this, and sometimes it is because they scored so high on the last test. If you have any concerns, please let me know and we can schedule a conference!

This week, we will begin unit 4 week 2 and will work on questioning, point of view, contractions, prefixes, and realistic fiction. Spelling homework will resume and all testing will take place on Friday as usual.

In math, we will review and take a check my progress tomorrow. We will continue working on multiplication and division through 12.

In science, we will review and continue learning about forms of energy.
In social studies, we will explore different points of view with a focus on legends.

Mrs. Manske will be joining us full time on Belmont's campus for her final internship. A welcome letter will be coming home to tell you  more about her! She will be splitting her time between our classroom and Mrs. Infantino's in 4th grade. Please join me in helping her to feel welcome and learn as much as possible while she is here!

First Week of December!

I hope you all had a fabulous break! We are in the countdown until Winter Break now!

This week in Language Arts, we will finish Unit 3 Week 5 with expository text. We are focusing on historical events like the development of railways. We will continue working on summarizing and sequencing events.

Please look for a spelling packet and math pages for homework this week!

Math: We will be wrapping up Chapter 7 this week and preparing to test the following Tuesday. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-mult-div-topic
Khan academy has some topics to help! Students can also log on to ALEKS to practice math concepts!

Science Fair: Boards and lab books are DUE! Please make sure the board has made it to school by Friday, December 7th!

We will have an open book Science Test on "The Universe and Stars" on Thursday!

Writing:

We completed our first Belmont Writes for 3rd Grade Informational Writing.
Our grade level winner was Libby Rainbolt!
Students brought home a color coded writing sample to share with you today! Please ask them questions about the parts of writing to help them better understand the process.
We are beginning to explore the difference between informational and opinion writing. We will practice with a lower level opinion writing prompt this week.

Character Trait: We are continuing to focus on Kindness for the month of December. Students completed a bucket filler activity on Monday to help fill others' buckets. Ask your child to explain what drips their bucket!

AR Goals are due on December 20th! Please make sure your child is progressing toward meeting their goal. You can check Home Connect.

Cultural Feast: 3rd grade has an upcoming Cultural Feast the last week before Winter Break. During this week, we will explore traditions, clothing, music, food, and other elements of cultures from around the world. We will have presentations from people of other cultural backgrounds and will have a feast on December 19th during our lunch time (WEDNESDAY). Be on the lookout for a sign up for this event. We are looking for traditional foods from other cultures to be served. For instance, Mrs. Hopkins made Jamaican chicken and rice one year. A student that moved here from Mexico brought Hisbiscus Tea. I would love for students to incorporate their own family heritage into the food that they bring.

Week of 10-29

Hello all!

I hope you have all had an easy time adjusting to the week back at school! The class should have brought home a STAR Reading and STAR Math report by now. Overall, we have seen phenomenal growth from the class, well beyond the 2 months of school that we have actually completed. I want to continue keeping this forward growth. Reading chapter books is a great way to continue improving this quickly in reading, as well as working ahead on Study Island. Our math growth was even better than reading! Let's keep this up by focusing on Study Island and ALEKS.
ALEKS allows students to work on concepts specific to their development. Therefore, it doesn't limit their potential and growth, nor does it give them concepts that they aren't ready for. If they get to a concept that they are not able to answer, there are vocabulary words to click, explanations, and even videos. Once they miss a certain number of problems, it will change the topic for them again.

Remember students are testing on  Cold Reads, Spelling , and comprehension/vocabulary on FRIDAY. We practice all of the skills in class several times, and also send home a study guide. Students can use Spellingcity.com/BelmontPierce to study by clicking on the appropriately labeled week "Be Unique" WON U3 WK 1.
We will continue Chapter 5 Division. This will including working on mastering their facts on Quick Tables within ALEKS. We will continue working on paper based Math Facts as well. Mastery will be measured by completion of 50 questions in 5 minutes (100% accuracy).

SCIENCE FAIR INFO!
You can attach paper if needed to complete any step and should create a running word document for easy printing at the end of the project. I suggest that you use FALL Break to complete the experiment and 3 trials.  We will complete a matching, cut and paste, activity for Science Board layout on Tuesday. This will come home to help you set up boards. Boards will be provided by the school once they arrive!
PLEASE NOTE THAT the Science experiment, procedures, and materials list step should be completed during Fall Break. Both steps can be turned in on October 25th. There is a typo in the schedule on the due dates.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about our government and the Constitution through our Studies of  Weekly program.

AR - AR goals are reset as of Monday.  Please check Renaissance Home Connect from time to time with your child to make sure they are progressing toward their goal.

You can quickly discover which lesson needs to be finished by logging into your student's account and of course by looking at the homework calendar.
